Pirate Ship, Shippo, Veeqo, Easyship, ShipStation, Shopify Shipping or your own carrier account — what each really costs to put a label on a parcel, where the discount actually comes from, and a separate answer for stores that ship abroad.

Shipping is the other cost every online store pays on every order, and unlike card fees it is one you can change next week. The same 1 lb parcel can cost $10.95 at the Post Office counter or $8.74 on a free label platform; the same box to Germany can land duty-free at the door or arrive with a surprise bill. This is a plain comparison of what the main US options cost in 2026 — the platforms that sell labels and the carriers behind them — written twice: once for stores that ship within the US, and once for stores that ship abroad.
Published prices as of October 2026. Postage is always extra and always changes, so treat the right-hand columns as the shape of each offer rather than a quote:
| Option | Software cost | Carriers and discounts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pirate Ship | Free | USPS Commercial Pricing; UPS Ground, Ground Saver, Air and Worldwide at up to 81–85% off list. Paid by the carriers, no markup. | Small domestic parcels, the simplest start |
| Shippo | Free → $17/mo | Starter: 30 labels a month, 5¢ a label only on your own carrier accounts. Pro from $17/mo by volume. USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express discounts, 85+ carriers, an API. | Growing stores, several carriers, developers |
| Veeqo | Free | Amazon-owned. USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Amazon Shipping and OnTrac at Amazon’s negotiated rates, up to 5% back in credits. Inventory add-on from $19/mo. | Multi-channel and Amazon sellers |
| Easyship | Free → ~$29/mo | Free to 50 shipments a month, then paid plans. 250+ couriers, strong DHL Express discounts, duties and taxes quoted at checkout. | Selling abroad |
| ShipStation | $14.99 → $349.99/mo | Priced by shipments: Starter $14.99 (50), Standard $29.99 (50, your own UPS/FedEx/DHL accounts and the API), Premium $349.99. Discounted USPS/UPS/DHL Express included. | Volume, automation rules, teams |
| Shopify Shipping | Included | Up to 77% off on Basic and up to 88% on Grow and Advanced (Shopify’s own figures) across USPS, UPS and DHL Express; $200 insurance free on Grow and above with Shopify Payments. | Shopify stores only |
| Direct with the carrier | Free → contract | USPS Click-N-Ship gives every account — personal included — commercial pricing automatically. UPS and FedEx accounts start near list price; real discounts are negotiated on volume. | Established volume, your own contracts |
Easyship’s paid tiers are Plus at $29 and Premier from $69 a month (its own announcements), with a Scale tier above that for higher volumes. Shopify’s percentages are its advertised maximums, not typical savings.
Every platform advertises “up to 85% off”, and every one of them is comparing against a price almost nobody pays: the carrier’s retail or daily list rate. Three things actually move the price of a label:
The rule of thumb: compare rates on your parcel — your usual weight, box size and the zones your customers live in — not on the headline percentage. Every platform here has a free rate calculator, and the cheapest one for a candle shop in Ohio is not the cheapest one for a bike-parts shop in Oregon.
Take a 1 lb package going five zones — roughly New York to Chicago or Los Angeles to Denver:
Over roughly 3 lb the picture changes: UPS Ground Saver bought through a platform usually comes in under USPS, and over 10 lb UPS or FedEx Ground almost always does. Under 1 lb USPS stays hard to beat, with one 2026 wrinkle — since 15 July, Ground Advantage parcels under a pound going to the rural ZIP codes on USPS’s list are charged the 15.99 oz rate.
Those two prices are also a moving target this year. USPS raised shipping prices on 18 January (Ground Advantage about 7.8% on average, Priority Mail 6.6%), added a temporary 8% increase on all domestic shipping from 26 April to 17 January 2027, changed its dimensional-weight divisor from 166 to 139 on 12 July (a big, light box now costs more), and layered holiday increases on commercial rates from 4 October to 17 January 2027 — $0.40 to $7.70 on Ground Advantage and $0.40 to $9.10 on Priority Mail depending on weight and zone. UPS and FedEx both took a 5.9% general increase for 2026, and their residential, delivery-area and large-package surcharges rose faster than that; one industry analysis puts the real-world rise for small shippers at 8–12%. The label you buy in December costs more than the one you bought in June, whichever platform prints it.
Most US stores ship most of their parcels domestically, under 5 lb, to residential addresses. For that profile the decision is mostly about volume and how much software you want around the label:
Two platform-specific notes. Shopify Shipping is genuinely competitive if you are on Shopify, and its free $200 insurance is worth something — but it only exists on Shopify, and its best rates sit on the $105-a-month Grow plan and above. And USPS’s own Click-N-Ship is a fine answer for a handful of parcels a week: USPS says all users automatically get commercial pricing there, with a Business Rate Card of unpublished prices on Priority Mail and Ground Advantage for business accounts; what you give up is the rate shopping, the UPS fallback and the order sync.
International shipping has three costs, and the postage is usually the smallest surprise: the label, the duties and taxes at the destination, and the time you spend on customs paperwork and problem parcels. The platforms differ far more here than on domestic labels.
For international selling the order of choice flips: Easyship first for the duties and the courier choice, Shippo second for DHL Express on a free plan, Pirate Ship for USPS and UPS international without frills, ShipStation if you already hold a DHL Express or FedEx account, and a direct DHL Express account once you ship enough abroad to negotiate — usually well over 100 international parcels a month.
This is the part of the comparison that is new this year, and it matters more than any rate difference between platforms:
On a hosted platform your shipping lives inside someone else’s app store: switching label providers means a new app, a new fee and often a re-done checkout. On a store you own, the shipping provider is a key you store once and change when a better rate comes along. In Claude CMS the shipping zones and rates live in your account under Shop → Shipping — with one-press setups for domestic, Canada & Mexico and the rest of the world — and the label providers sit under Connections: Shippo, EasyPost, Veeqo and DHL Express for US sellers, Royal Mail, Australia Post, Shippit, Starshipit and others for the Australian and Indian editions. Digital products skip delivery altogether. Nothing adds a per-order fee, and nothing stops you moving from Pirate Ship to Shippo to your own UPS contract as the volume grows, because the store never belonged to the label company.
As with payment fees, there is no single winner — only the right fit:
For a US store in 2026 the cheapest label is almost always USPS Ground Advantage at commercial pricing for the light parcels and UPS Ground Saver through a platform for the heavy ones, printed by whichever free platform fits how you work. Spend the money you save on the thing that actually loses customers: a checkout that shows the real delivery cost, including duties, before they press pay.

For most parcels under 3 lb, USPS Ground Advantage at commercial pricing through a free platform — Pirate Ship, Shippo Starter or Veeqo — typically around 20% below the counter price on a 1 lb parcel. Over about 3 lb, UPS Ground Saver through the same platforms often wins. The free platforms are paid by the carriers, so there is no software fee to earn back.
No. Pirate Ship and Veeqo are free, Shippo and Easyship have free tiers, and all include discounted USPS, UPS and other carrier rates. You pay for software when you need its features: automation rules, many users, bringing your own negotiated accounts, inventory. ShipStation starts at $14.99 a month and only lets you connect your own UPS, FedEx or DHL accounts from its $29.99 Standard plan.
For light, low-value goods USPS First-Class Package International (up to 4 lb) is usually the lowest postage, but slow and lightly tracked. For anything heavier or time-sensitive, DHL Express, UPS Worldwide Saver or FedEx International bought through Easyship or Shippo is often far below list price and arrives in days. Quote duties and taxes at checkout and ship delivered-duty-paid.
No. The EU removed its €150 duty exemption on 1 July 2026 and, until the full tariff in July 2028, charges a flat €3 customs duty per tariff line on low-value parcels; VAT is still collected through IOSS. Accurate HS codes, the landed cost shown at checkout and DDP shipping keep European customers from being charged at the door.
Where the numbers come from (checked 16 October 2026): the published pricing pages of Shippo, Veeqo, ShipStation, Pirate Ship and Easyship; USPS’s 2026 price-change notices as summarised by Stamps.com and ShipStation, with the July 2026 commercial price list for the 1 lb example; the UPS and FedEx 2026 rate announcements; the EU customs reform notices published by FedEx and DHL; HMRC’s Reforming customs rules for low value imports (13 July 2026); USPS’s Click-N-Ship page for the commercial-pricing line; and Shopify’s own shipping pages.
