MASS&VOID

We build with what is left out. Every wall we raise exists to shape the emptiness beside it — light, air, and the silence between rooms.

Selected projects

2011 — 2026
01

Chalk House

Private residenceSouth Downs, UK2023

A single in-situ concrete wall runs the length of the site; the house happens on one side of it, the garden on the other.

02

Cistern Gallery

CulturalPorto, PT2021

A nineteenth-century water cistern re-opened as a single vaulted room for one artwork at a time. Nothing was added that could be revealed instead.

03

Meridian Chapel

SacredJutland, DK2019

Two tilted planes admit a blade of light that crosses the floor once a day. The congregation sits where the light will be, not where it is.

04

Quarry Archive

CivicTicino, CH2017

A regional archive sunk into the granite quarry that built the town. The reading room floor is the quarry bed, swept but uncut.

Studio

Approach

We are a studio of eleven, working slowly, on few things. Each project begins with a long silence: weeks on site before a line is drawn, watching where the light falls in the morning and where people stand without being told to. What we build afterwards is an attempt to make those observations permanent.

Our material vocabulary is deliberately narrow — concrete, lime render, unpainted timber, and glass held in the thinnest frame the engineer will tolerate. A narrow vocabulary forces precision. When you cannot reach for a new material, you must reach instead for a better proportion, a truer joint, a quieter junction between wall and sky.

We measure our success not at handover but a decade later: whether the building has weathered into its place, whether its rooms are used as they wished to be used, and whether the emptiness we protected is still empty. Mass is what we are paid for. Void is what we are remembered by.
